This will be an ongoing list as questions and facts come up along the way. Here are some of them for now.
What do I need to play a game?
At this time, the OSAKit.net control will only work on a Windows computer and Internet Explorer. If you want to run your own games from your server, you will need:
- OSA Kit a small file hosted at your server (only 19KB! it is very lightweight!)
- Internet Explorer or any other compatible browser.
- VB runtime Libraries on the users machine (almost 1MB)
If you'd like to place an order for the OSAKit.net Software please click here.
Why do I need a ActiveX Control?
Aside from downloading the game as a .zip file, you need it to play the game in the browser.
Who signed the ActiveX Control?
Me, James Tadeo. You will notice that during the initial download, there is a message that will appear asking if you will accept the ActiveX control. If you say yes, then you will be able to play the games. Unless you see the company or person who signed the plugin via the code signed certificate, you should think before you download. For example, my code signed app is applicable to my main Web site www.JamesTadeo.com. I have been on the Web for over 10 years. You can check with Network Solutions. I also have my other same named sites in .net and .ca format. Once again, only accept *my* code signed if it comes from www.jamestadeo.com, www.jamestadeo.net or OSAKit.net.
I heard ActiveX Controls are dangerous?
Unfortunately, this is where ignorance and misinformation has done its work. ActiveX Controls are NOT dangerous by themselves. Actually, if you are running Windows, you are probably using a type of Windows control right now. They are only dangerous if they contain malicious code. And really, that can happen with any platform or operating system. The OSAKit.net software does NOT read or write to the host computer and is automatically in its own sandbox-like container. Flash, ShockWave, and Java Applets are all forms of plugins and help to bring a richer experience to Web user. The OSAKit.net software is also code signed in order to validate its origin.
Why does my browser show a security warning message?
This will happen with *any* ActiveX control that is being downloaded. If you have confidence in the code signer, then you can go ahead.
Will you ever support the Mac Games?
Yes! However not as an inbrowser game but as a downloadable game. However, you will be able to multiplayer with both PC and Mac games where multiplayer is supported.
Please let me know. I'm sure at one point or another someone else asked the very same question. Share it with the other Web guest so we can all benefit. Please keep the questions related to OSAKit and my standard answer will always be 42.
